-Optional spray paint to color the frame
-Plastic sheet to set your frame on when painting (to avoid making a mess)
-Any color yarn
-Any color poster board/construction paper
-Measuring tool/straight edge
-Hot glue gun
Okay so we have our materials, let’s get started with our DIY picture frame display. It’s really easy, here’s how:
To begin, carefully pop off the back of your picture frame (cardboard), but be careful not to damage it. It will be needed later on in the project.
If you are choosing to paint your frame, carefully set it down on your piece of cardboard. Make sure if you’re using a plastic frame that the spray paint you are using bonds to plastic. Neatly and carefully cover the surface of your picture frame with the paint of your choice. You should wait about half an hour for it to dry before continuing with your DIY picture frame display.
Now, take the back of your picture frame as well as your poster board/construction paper. Set the back of your picture frame (cardboard) against the poster board/construction paper and using your tracing pencil, outline the shape of the cardboard then carefully cut out the outline shape.
Next, check to make sure the shape you cut out fits inside of your picture frame to avoid any nasty surprises later. If it does not fit, retrace the back of the frame or make adjustments as needed. Then you will take the back of the frame and glue it to your cut out shape so that they are perfectly aligned.
Starting in one of the upper corners, mark an inch or so down from the edge of the frame. Then, go back and mark roughly five inches down from the last mark. Repeat this step for the other upper corner.
The next step is to begin gluing the yarn onto the frame. Using your glue gun, glue over one of the upper marks and put the end of your yarn right into the glue. If you want extra security, add more glue on top of the yarn. Let the glue dry completely.
Before cutting your yarn, place your cardboard into the picture frame so that it is snug and secure. Flip the entire frame over and pull the yarn so it makes a tight, straight line. Flip the picture frame back over as is.
In order to secure the yarn further, place glue on the top of the upper mark with the other side of the yarn that hasn’t been glued yet. Once the glue is completely dry, cut off the excess yarn as close to the glue as you can get it.
The next step is basically a repeat of the previous steps, but with the lower marks instead. Note that this is optional, as you may only want one row. Place one end of your yarn on one of the lower marks you made on your frame. Glue it down thoroughly and let the glue dry completely. Then, place the cardboard snugly into the frame with the yarn behind it. Pull it tightly, just like you did with the last strand of yarn. Turn the frame back over and glue down the other end of the yarn.
Lastly, you are going to need to secure the back of the picture frame by gluing it around the edges and firmly pushing the tabs down. Make sure it is secure so that it doesn’t fall apart over time. Congratulations! your DIY picture frame display is completed.
Now your DIY picture frame display is done and looking beautiful. You can further customize it if you wish. Options include: glitter, stickers, markers, paint, colored pencils or crayons, or even penciled drawings!
